Both of Them Wanted a Drink and Neither Would Move Over
Two noses, one steel bowl. A fluffy orange cat and Waffles the puppy are drinking at the same time, shoulder to shoulder, their ears nearly touching. Ripples spread across the water. The cat's long fur glows like marmalade in the warm room light, and the puppy's reddish-gold coat almost matches hers. A pair of sneakers and a pile of laundry sit in the background, and the wooden floor is a little scuffed from lots of happy use.
Fresh water matters for both cats and dogs, and it is worth refilling the bowl daily. Many cats prefer water bowls placed away from their food, and some like wide, shallow dishes so their whiskers do not touch the sides. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are easy to clean, which helps keep bacteria down. If a puppy and a cat share a household, make sure the cat has her own quiet feeding spot, since dog food is not right for cats and the reverse is true as well. Sharing water is fine, sharing meals is best avoided.
There is something very peaceful about animals who drink together without any fuss. The orange cat does not seem to mind the puppy crowding in, and Waffles is lapping away with total concentration. Once the bowl is empty, they will probably go back to the important business of napping.
