Two Garden Inspectors Checked Every Row of Lettuce
Evening lights glow on the brick wall as two explorers inspect the vegetable bed. A round-faced cream Exotic Shorthair sits with her head turned toward her companion, amber eyes wide, while a soft gray-tan lop-eared bunny faces forward with her ears drooping beside the greens. Lettuce, carrot tops and bean vines fill the beds around them, and a blue watering can lies on its side in the dirt. A pair of old work shoes and some scattered tools show that the gardener has been busy.
A vegetable garden is full of interesting smells, but it has some hidden dangers for pets. Onions, garlic and chives can be harmful to cats, and rabbits should not eat certain plants such as rhubarb leaves or potato greens. Even safe veggies should be given in small amounts, because sudden changes can upset a rabbit's delicate digestion. Fertilizer and pest control products should be pet safe and stored away. If your animals love garden time, supervise them closely or use a fenced area. When in doubt about a particular plant, your vet can give you a quick list of what is safe to nibble.
Even without a snack, the two seem happy to simply wander and poke around. A garden after supper, with the soil still warm and the air cooling off, is a perfect place for two quiet friends to take a stroll.
