A Blue Great Dane and a Horse Leaned Together in the Snow

AI imagegreat danechestnut horsesnow

Snow is falling softly on the yard, and a big blue-grey Great Dane has leaned his shoulder right into the side of a chestnut horse. His long face is turned toward the camera, and his floppy ears droop in the cold, while the horse stands steady beside him, warm and calm. Behind them a wooden fence and a bare tree peek out above the white ground. Tiny flakes have collected on the Dane's back and on the horse's mane, and their breath rises in soft, slow clouds into the air.

Great Danes are among the tallest dog breeds, but they are famously gentle. Often called gentle giants, they are friendly, patient and affectionate with their families. They have short coats that offer little protection from cold, so in winter a Dane needs a warm place to sleep and a coat on chilly walks. They also grow quickly, so talk to your vet about nutrition and joint care.

Horses cope with cold better than many animals, thanks to their thick winter coats, but they still need shelter from wind and wet, plenty of forage and unfrozen water. Leaning together is also a natural way for herd animals to share warmth and comfort.

The snow keeps falling, the two friends keep leaning and the world seems very quiet. Some of the sweetest winter pictures involve very big, very gentle friends. Warm friends make a cold day kinder.
