A Chocolate Lab Led a Chestnut Horse Down the Garden Path
The gravel crunches under his paws, and the leader of this little parade is a chocolate Labrador with a look of quiet purpose. Right behind him, a chestnut horse lowers its head and follows, nose just a few feet from the dog's tail. Garden beds, a watering can and a wooden fence line the path, and green leaves lift in a gentle breeze. Wildflowers and herbs crowd the edges of the path, and the dog's collar tag jingles with every confident step along the stones.
Labradors are friendly, eager dogs with a love of food and a strong desire to please. They make excellent walking companions, and many enjoy a job like carrying a toy or finding a treat. Their enthusiasm needs an outlet, so regular exercise, training and play are essential for a happy Lab.
Horses are natural followers. In a herd, they look to a leader for safety and cues, which is why a calm and confident companion can be reassuring. In real life, though, a horse and dog out for a stroll should be well supervised, with the dog on a leash and a handler present, so nothing startles them.
The two are in step, the path is long and the morning is bright. Following a good friend is a fine way to spend a day. Good leaders walk gently.
