The Apple Tree Gave Two Friends the Perfect Place to Nap
Apples hang among the leaves overhead, and in the shade below, a ruddy Abyssinian rests on the grass with her head turned to the camera and her eyes half shut in a drowsy squint. Next to her, a cream puppy has dropped his head onto the lawn, his lashes lowered and his ear flopped sideways. Her long tail lies along the grass beside him. Fallen leaves and a small red apple lie in the grass, and a wooden fence, a clay flowerpot and some dry plants sit at the edge of the garden. The light is warm and soft, filtered through the branches.
Shade is important for pets on warm days, since cats and dogs cannot cool off as easily as people. A spot under a tree with fresh water nearby is a good choice for summer afternoons. Apples are a safe treat in small slices for many dogs, but the seeds and core should be avoided, and fallen fruit can ferment or attract bees. Abyssinians are lively cats with a reputation for curiosity, so they are often found exploring even when they look like they are resting. As always, ask your vet about safe treats for your pets.
Before long, the apples will ripen and fall. For the time being, the best thing happening under this tree is a shared, sleepy afternoon.
