An Aussie Led the Way Down the Path, and Someone Small Followed
A narrow gravel lane runs beside the old house, with flowerpots, a rain barrel and stacks of boards lining the edge. Down the middle trots a blue merle Australian Shepherd with its fluffy tail raised, and a few steps behind comes a small brown-and-white calf on tall, wobbly legs. The Aussie glances back to make sure she is keeping up, and the calf is following with her nose forward and her ears alert.
Australian Shepherds are energetic, intelligent herding dogs, and the blue merle coat, with its marbled gray and black patches, is one of the breed's most recognized looks. They are known to be loyal and active, so a daily walk or a good run is a must, along with games that keep their minds busy. Without enough exercise, they can start herding anything that moves, from children to cats.
Young animals often follow an older, confident one, and calves are no exception. If you are walking a dog near farm animals, it helps to keep the dog on a leash, keep the path clear of tripping hazards and let the pace be easy for the smallest walker.
Clover is learning where the interesting things are by tagging along behind someone who knows the way. The dog seems quite pleased to be in charge of the tour, and the pace stays slow enough for little legs.
