A Big Brown Newfoundland Sat Quietly Below a Line of Ducklings

AI imagenewfoundlandducklingsporch steps

The porch steps have a long line of tiny visitors. A big brown Newfoundland with soft, thoughtful eyes and a thick, wavy coat sits at the foot of the steps, and above him on the top step a row of fluffy yellow ducklings is lined up as neatly as buttons. A green lawn and a wooden fence glow behind them in the afternoon light.

Newfoundlands are large, gentle, patient dogs. They were bred as working dogs for fishermen, and they are famous for being sweet with children and other animals. Their thick double coat needs frequent brushing, and they tend to drool and shed. They do best in cool weather and love water, so shade and fresh water are a must in the summer.

Ducklings can be curious and may gather on steps, but young ones need supervision, warmth and a safe place to rest. Steps can be dangerous for little ones, and they should never be left alone with a large dog, no matter how gentle. Ducklings need clean water and proper food as well, and a vet or poultry expert can offer more advice.

The Newfoundland looks like a calm, kind guardian, and the ducklings look like they have found the best seat in the house. It is a peaceful end to the day. Some of the best neighbors are the quiet ones. The steps are comfortable, the lawn is green and nobody is rushing anywhere.
