A Sleepy Basset Hound Became a Lamb's Warm Belly Bed
Spread out on the rug like a rumpled blanket, a lemon and white Basset Hound lies with his long, droopy ears falling to the floor and his eyes shut. On his belly, Dumpling the lamb has curled up with her head down and legs tucked in, sound asleep. The room behind them is calm, with a couch, a few slippers and a plant. The Basset's wrinkled brow is relaxed, and his big paws stretch out in front. He doesn't seem to mind being a bed, and he looks like he might be asleep, too. One long ear lies across the lamb's back like a little scarf.
Basset Hounds are gentle, laid-back dogs known for their long ears, droopy eyes and excellent sense of smell. They were bred to track scents, and many love to follow their noses. They tend to be patient and friendly, and they're often wonderful with children and other animals. Their long backs and short legs mean they should avoid jumping and keep a healthy weight. Their ears need regular cleaning to prevent infection, so ask your vet how to do it right. A calm dog like a Basset can be a comfortable nap spot, though a heavy lamb on his belly shouldn't stay there for hours. Short strolls and sniffing games keep a Basset healthy and happy.
The dog snores softly, and the lamb dreams on. It's a deep, quiet nap.
