A Maltese Puppy Curled Up in the Hay Next to a Sleeping Pony

AI imagemalteseponybarn hay

Golden evening light slants into the barn and turns every strand of straw into a thread of gold. In the middle of it, a fluffy white Maltese puppy has flopped down with his chin on his paw and his eyes just barely closed. Right next to him, Clover the pony lies stretched out in the hay with her long nose resting on the ground and her shaggy mane spilling across her face. A pair of boots and a laundry basket wait in the background, and neither sleeper seems to care.

Hay makes a wonderful bed, but it is worth a little caution when puppies are involved. Dry bits can tickle a nose or collect in a long coat, so a quick brush afterward keeps a fluffy dog comfortable. Many dogs love to burrow into a pile of something soft and warm, and animals of all kinds tend to rest more deeply when they feel safe near a friend. Ponies often doze lying down only when they are very relaxed, which makes this a sweet sign of trust. As always, keep an eye on dogs around feed and farm supplies, and ask your vet if you have questions.

There is no sound in this scene except, perhaps, a soft sigh and the rustle of straw. The puppy and the pony have found the exact middle of the day's calm, and they have decided to stay there as long as possible.
