The Sun Landed on the Floor, and a Dalmatian and Cat Moved Right In
A long stripe of afternoon sun has landed on the old plank floor, and a Dalmatian and a cream-colored cat have each claimed a share of it. The dog stretches out with his spotted head low and his dark eyes watching, while the cat sits right beside him with her amber eyes narrowed in pleasure. A wicker basket and a lamp stand in the shadows of the room, and the warm wood glows like honey. Dust motes drift lazily through the light, and the whole room smells of warm wood.
Cats are natural sun-seekers, and so are many dogs. Basking helps pets stay warm and relaxed, and a patch of sun is often the first place a pet will settle. British Shorthairs are calm, sturdy cats with dense coats, while Dalmatians are athletic dogs that need regular exercise. That makes a quiet nap a well-earned reward. Fresh water and a shady corner nearby are good ideas, since pets can get too warm in a sunny window.
Spots and cream, side by side. The Dalmatian's spots look like ink dots against the white fur, and the cat's round face is as smooth as a pat of butter. Even their breathing seems to match, slow and steady.
There is a gentleness to it all, a feeling that this friendship was made to be easy. The sun moves slowly, and so do they, drifting along with the afternoon. Nobody has anywhere else to be.
