A tricolor Beagle and a brown and white calf sit on a worn black tractor seat in a farmyard, nuzzling. 19 / 30

Hank the Beagle Took the Tractor Seat. Maple Had a Question to Ask Him.

The old tractor is parked for the evening, and its seat has two very happy passengers. A tricolor Beagle sits upright with his long ears draped and his tongue peeking out, and a brown and white calf leans in so close that her nose is pressing against his cheek. Terracotta pots and a wooden shed sit behind them, and the last light of the day warms the cracked black seat. We'll call the Beagle Hank and the calf Maple.

Beagles were bred to follow scent trails, and their noses are powerful tools. That is why a Beagle on a farm tends to be endlessly busy, sniffing every boot and bale. They are cheerful, sociable dogs that usually do well with other animals, and they often howl or bay when excited. Their curiosity can lead them astray, so secure fencing and a good recall are important for any Beagle family.

If your dog loves to explore around farm machinery, remember that tractors and tools can be dangerous. Oil, fuel, and sharp edges are all hazards to a curious pet, so keep these things out of reach. A sturdy leash and supervision are a good idea any time a dog is near equipment.

Hank is sitting proudly in the driver's seat, and Maple is quite happy to be the co-pilot. The engine stays quiet, but the friendship runs smoothly.
