The Busiest Terrier on the Farm Finally Fell Asleep Next to a Calf

A black wood stove ticks quietly in the corner, a stack of split logs waits beside it, and two small sleepers are stretched out on the floorboards. A wiry tricolor Jack Russell Terrier rests his chin on the wood, eyes closed, while a brown and white calf lies right beside him with her pink nose lowered and her ears relaxed. Worn boots, a plaid shirt, and a coiled rope hint at a busy day just ended. The terrier is Scrappy and the calf is Maple.

Jack Russells are bursting with energy, so a sleeping one usually means the day has been well spent. They are intelligent and bold, and they need plenty of exercise, puzzle toys, and training to keep their minds busy. When they do finally wind down, many love to find the warmest spot in the house and stay there.

Warm spots are great, but heat sources need respect. Keep pets a safe distance from wood stoves, which can stay hot long after the fire is out, and use a sturdy guard if animals roam free in the room. Tools, ash, and kindling should stay out of reach too. If you have a senior pet who loves a warm spot, a heated bed designed for pets can be a safer choice.

Scrappy is finally still, and Maple is sleeping soundly beside him. The fire pops, and nobody stirs.
