A Tiny Pomeranian Led the Way, and a Very Big Horse Followed Along
The gravel path winds past the garden fence, and a small procession is making its way along it. A fluffy cream Pomeranian leads with her tail curled over her back and her ears pricked, and behind her walks a tall chestnut horse with his head lowered, in no hurry at all. A second tiny fluffball trails in between. Shrubs, a wooden fence, and a flowerpot line the way. The lead Pomeranian is Pumpkin and the horse is Copper. The afternoon is quiet, and the gravel crunches softly under every step.
Pomeranians are small dogs descended from larger sled dogs, and they have a bold, confident attitude to match. Their thick double coats call for regular brushing, but they should not be shaved, since the coat helps regulate temperature. They are alert and chatty, and they often walk as though they own the place.
Horses are herd animals who naturally follow a leader they trust. They are very good at reading the mood of those around them, and calm, steady behavior from a companion helps them relax. If you walk a dog near a horse, keep the dog on a leash and stay out of the horse's kicking range, which includes the area behind him. Never let a small dog run underfoot.
Pumpkin keeps her chin up, and Copper follows without a worry. It may be the sweetest parade on the farm.
