The Samoyed Became a Cloud, and the Little Horse Climbed On to Nap
The Samoyed is the softest bed in the house, and the little horse has noticed. A big white dog lies on her side on the wooden floor, her thick fur spread out like a cloud and her dark eyes looking up with a sweet, upside-down smile. Resting across her, a small chestnut horse tucks his legs and lays his head down on her shoulder. A blanket, a basket, and a leafy plant fill in the quiet bedroom. We'll call the Samoyed Snowball and the horse Copper.
Samoyeds were bred in Siberia to herd reindeer and pull sleds, and their fluffy white coats kept them warm in bitter cold. They are friendly, social dogs with a famous smile, and they usually love being around people and other animals. That thick double coat sheds heavily, so brushing a few times a week keeps it healthy and helps control the fur.
Because of their heavy coats, Samoyeds can overheat in warm weather, so they need cool rooms, shade, and fresh water. If your dog is lying under or beside another animal, watch to make sure she is comfortable and can get up when she wants to. A dog should always be able to move away from any weight or pressure. Never leave large and small animals unsupervised.
Snowball is the picture of patience, and Copper looks right at home. It is hard to say who is more comfortable.
