Pepper the Terrier Fell Asleep First. The Horse Followed Soon After.

The wood stove glows, a plaid jacket hangs on the wall, and the whole room is perfectly still. A white and tan Jack Russell Terrier is curled up in a tight ball on a rug with his eyes shut, and just behind him a chestnut horse lies on the floor with his head resting and his eyes closed too. Mugs, books, and a potted plant sit on the shelf. The terrier is Pepper again and the horse is Copper. A few logs are stacked beside the stove, and the warm light makes everything look golden.

Horses can nap standing up or lying down, and when they do lie down it is a sign that they feel safe. They sleep in short stretches, and a calm environment helps. Jack Russells, on the other hand, run on endless energy and tend to sleep deeply after a long day of exercise. A well-exercised terrier is a happy and relaxed one.

If your pets share space near a wood stove, make sure they cannot touch hot surfaces, and use a sturdy guard if needed. Stoves stay hot long after the flames die down. Keep matches, kindling, and ashes out of reach, and make sure the room is ventilated.

Pepper and Copper are both fast asleep, and the stove is the only thing still working. Even the busiest day ends in a good snooze. The rest of the farm can wait until morning.
