The Basset Puppy Picked the Warmest Spot on the Deck and Brought a Pony
Weathered wooden boards stretch out in the afternoon light, and in the middle of them a small Basset Hound puppy has plopped down with his ears spread like a pair of wings. A shaggy cream pony lies right beside him, her eyes shut and her chin on the planks. The deck is scattered with a few autumn leaves, and flowerpots, a watering can and some garden tools wait in the background. A bright patch of sunshine warms the two of them.
Basset Hound puppies have long ears, short legs and a nose that never stops working. They were bred to track scent, so they are curious and sometimes stubborn, though also very affectionate. Because of their long bodies, they should not jump on and off high furniture too much, and a healthy weight is important for their backs. Ponies need regular grooming, and a shaggy coat like this one can hide skin problems, so check it often. On a deck, watch out for slippery boards, which can be hard on both small legs and hooves. Rain, frost or algae make wood slick, and gentle animals can slip easily. Sunny afternoons are a pleasure, but offering water and shade keeps everyone comfortable.
The pup has the slow, patient look of someone who plans to stay all afternoon. The pony clearly agrees.
