The Dalmatian Puppy Found the Cookies Meant for Santa

AI imagedalmatian puppychristmascookies

A white Dalmatian puppy with black spots and floppy ears leans down toward a plate of cookies on the floor, nose twitching. The cookies look golden and thick with chips, and a few crumbs are scattered beside the plate. Behind him a lit tree glows, a plaid blanket hangs from the sofa and a warm lamp lights the living room. His posture says it all: this puppy has just discovered the best smell in the house.

Cookies left out for Santa are a nice tradition, but if they are chocolate chip, they pose a real risk to dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs process poorly, and some cookies also contain raisins, macadamia nuts or sugar substitutes that can be harmful. If your dog eats chocolate, call your vet or an animal poison hotline promptly. A good rule is to place treats for Santa on a high shelf or counter, well out of reach. Dalmatians are energetic, intelligent dogs that need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. A bored or underexercised puppy can find ways to entertain himself. Offer a safe chew toy or a puzzle feeder, and keep the cookie plate high. Your vet can suggest dog-friendly holiday treats if you want to include him in the fun.

Santa's cookies are safe for now, and the puppy has been granted a very smelly lesson. He will have to settle for his own treats this year.
