The Snow Started on Christmas Eve, and a Kitten Saw It First
Outside, the snow is coming down over rooftops and bare trees. Inside, a fluffy black kitten sits on the carpet beside a tall window, her glossy fur catching a touch of the grey light and her round eyes fixed on the world outside. The room is quiet and plain, just white walls and a deep windowsill, which only makes the moment feel more peaceful. Everything seems to be waiting for Christmas to arrive.
Cats are natural window watchers. A view of birds, falling snow or passing cars gives an indoor kitten lots of mental stimulation, and for many cats it's a favorite form of entertainment. A sunny perch or a comfortable cushion by a window is a simple way to enrich a home. Just make sure windows are closed or screened, since a startled kitten can try to leap at something outside. Cold glass can also chill a small body, so a blanket nearby is a nice touch. Black cats have a reputation for being unlucky in some stories, but they're simply cats, and often very affectionate ones.
Let's call her Midnight. Her ears are tilted forward and her whiskers are still, as if each snowflake is a small mystery she plans to solve. In a little while someone will call her to dinner, but for now she has a front-row seat to the first snow.
