Biscuit Sat Beside the Freshly Lit Jack-o'-Lantern, Watching the Dark
Dusk has wrapped the yard in blue-gray mist, and the jack-o'-lantern on the front walk has just been lit. Its carved triangle eyes and toothy grin glow bright orange, and sitting right beside it is Biscuit, a shaggy cream Havanese with a gentle face and soft brown eyes. Biscuit gazes off into the twilight as if keeping watch for the first trick-or-treaters of the night. A pot of orange mums blooms on the step behind, fallen leaves gather along the edge of the walk, and the porch of the pale house fades into the evening haze.
Havanese are cheerful, sociable little dogs from Cuba, known for their silky coats and love of being near their people. They tend to be friendly with visitors, which can make Halloween a fun night for them, though the constant doorbell may still wear them out. Real candles inside jack-o'-lanterns are a fire and burn risk around pets, especially fluffy, curious ones whose fur could get too close. Battery-operated lights give the same cozy glow without the danger. Also remember that carved pumpkins can grow mold within days, so toss them before a dog decides to take a bite.
The glow of a jack-o'-lantern and a patient little dog beside it make a scene straight out of an autumn storybook. Biscuit seems ready for whatever the night brings.
