The Cookies Were Left Out for Santa. A Tuxedo Kitten Got There First.

AI imagetuxedo kittencookies for santachristmas eve

Her little pink nose is nearly touching the cookie, and her black-and-white face is a study in concentration. The tuxedo kitten crouches at the edge of a plate piled with chocolate chip cookies, crumbs scattered across the wooden table beside her. A blue towel, pine garland and a soft-focus living room stretch out behind. Her ears are tipped forward and her eyes are almost closed as she inhales the scent.

Chocolate chip cookies are a classic treat for Santa, and a classic risk for pets. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, and cookies can also contain raisins, macadamia nuts or sweeteners that are unsafe. Kittens are small, so even a little can matter. Cats are carnivores and don't need sweets, so there's no reason to share, and a few pieces of kitten food are a better reward. Put the plate on a high counter, cover it, and sweep up crumbs. If you think she's eaten some, call your vet for advice.

We'll call her Oreo. She's just sniffing for now, taking in the sweet smell with a look of pure wonder. The cookies are safe as long as someone moves the plate, and Oreo can go back to batting at ribbons, which are much more fun anyway. It is a delightful little drama, a very small detective and a very large plate, and everyone in the house will be smiling about it long after the cookies are gone.
