A Round-Faced Red Kitten Met a Mug of Marshmallow Cocoa

The mug is bigger than she is, and the marshmallows floating on top are clearly the main attraction. A fluffy red tabby kitten with a round, flat face sits on a wooden coffee table beside the mug, gazing at the cocoa with wide copper eyes. Around her, a plaid blanket, a knit throw, pinecones and holiday clutter are spread across the table, and a decorated tree glows by the window.

Hot cocoa is on the list of things to keep away from pets. Chocolate contains theobromine, which cats cannot process well, and the cream and sugar can upset a kitten's stomach. Hot drinks can also cause burns or spills, so keep mugs well out of reach and clean up drips quickly. Exotic Shorthairs are calm, sweet cats with a plush coat, but even a calm kitten can be curious. A little bowl of fresh water or a few kitten treats is a far better way to include her in the festivities.

Let's call her Ginger. She's studying the cocoa with all the focus of a scientist, wondering what those little white clouds could possibly be. Fortunately, she hasn't tried a taste, and a toy mouse will soon draw her attention away. It is a sweet reminder that kittens find wonder in everything, from the steam rising off a mug to the smallest marshmallow floating on top of it, all on a cozy afternoon.
