One Mug of Cocoa, One Small Kitten, and a Very Serious Staring Contest
Golden evening light spills across the living room, and a small gray kitten sits on the coffee table with its eyes on one thing: a big white mug of hot cocoa heaped with marshmallows. Its head tilts toward the mug while its paws stay planted, as if it is deciding whether to try something. Pine sprigs, a few crumbs, and a remote control scatter across the table, and the tree shines in the corner behind a plaid-covered sofa.
Cocoa is a lovely holiday treat for people, but it is not safe for pets. Chocolate contains substances called theobromine and caffeine, which cats and dogs cannot process well, and the sweeteners in some marshmallows, such as xylitol, can also be dangerous. Hot drinks are a burn risk too. The simple fix is to keep mugs out of paw reach, ideally covered, and to wipe up spills right away. If your pet does sip something it should not, call your vet or an animal poison hotline without waiting.
This little observer, who looks like a Dusty to us, shows polite interest and nothing more. The warm steam and the sweet smell are curious enough to need a close inspection from a safe distance. A cozy evening, a glowing tree, and a kitten who is content just to look: that is a pretty good definition of the season.
