Of All the Pumpkins on This Porch, One Is Clearly Everyone's Favorite
Of all the pumpkins on this porch, one is clearly the favorite. A big, fluffy orange longhair sits square on the doormat in a puffy, plush pumpkin costume, complete with a little green stem and leaves perched on top of his head. His thick orange ruff spills out over the collar, and his amber eyes look straight ahead with a dignified, slightly long-suffering expression. Behind him, a dried flower wreath hangs on the dark front door, rain boots and sneakers sit by the wall, a jacket hangs on the railing, and pots of rust-colored mums brighten the corner.
If you do try a costume, fit matters as much as looks. Measure around your cat's neck and chest before buying, and choose something that fastens loosely enough to slide two fingers underneath. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are best, since thick plush outfits can make long-haired cats overheat quickly, especially indoors near heaters or in a warm house full of guests. Look for costumes without elastic bands that dig in, and skip anything that hangs low enough to trip over. Keep sessions short, offer treats, and take the costume off at the first sign of discomfort. For many cats, a few photos are plenty of fun.
This fluffy fellow seems willing to be the cutest pumpkin on the block for just a moment. After that, he will surely go back to being a cat-shaped pumpkin, which is cute enough.
