A Shih Tzu in a Hot Dog Costume Gave the Lawn His Most Serious Look
A scruffy gold-and-white Shih Tzu sits on the lawn in a soft hot dog costume complete with bun and a stripe of yellow mustard. His long ears fall around his face, his dark eyes are fixed on something off-camera, and a few dry leaves cling to the grass. Pumpkins sit by the porch behind him, and the sky is the muted color of late October.
Shih Tzus are small, affectionate companion dogs with a long, flowing coat and a friendly, sometimes cheeky personality. The breed has long been kept as a lap dog, and many are happiest when they are with their people. Their coat requires regular brushing and trimming, and their flat faces mean they can overheat, so avoid hot weather and heavy exertion.
A costume should be lightweight and well fitted, and he should be able to walk, sit, breathe and see freely. Avoid costumes with small pieces that could come off and be swallowed, and let him wear it only while you are watching. Reward calm behavior with praise and a snack that is safe for dogs. Remove the costume if he seems stressed.
The hot dog is not entirely sure about the bun, but he is a good sport. Maybe the lesson of the day is that every dog looks better with a little mustard. His tail is probably swishing out of sight, because underneath all that mustard, he is clearly having a very good day.
