A Tiny Chihuahua Puppy Fell Asleep Under the Stockings
A tiny black-and-tan puppy sleeps curled on a woven mat, one front paw tucked under his chin and his fluffy ears relaxed. Above him on the mantel, three knitted stockings in cream, red and tan hang beside a garland of greenery with dried orange slices. A teddy-bear toy in a basket, a pile of blankets and a framed photo glow in the warm light behind him.
Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed, with a big personality packed into a tiny body. They are alert, loyal and often devoted to one person, and they can be quite lively and brave. Because they are small, they chill easily, so a warm spot, a soft bed and a sweater in cold weather help keep them comfortable.
A mantel setup can be lovely but needs a few checks. Candles should be well out of reach, a fireplace should have a screen if a fire is burning, and hanging stockings should be placed where a small puppy can't tug them down. Keep small ornaments and dried fruit off the floor, and give him his own cozy bed in a draft-free corner.
For now, he sleeps soundly under the stockings, and the best present is already here. The house is quiet, and the smallest dog in it is the happiest. When he wakes, he will stretch, yawn and trot off to find his next small adventure.
