A Dachshund Puppy Gazed at a Mug of Cocoa Like It Was a Gift

A chocolate-brown Dachshund puppy perches on the edge of the coffee table, his long ears draped and his nose turned toward a big white mug topped with fluffy marshmallows. His eyes are soft and a little pleading, and behind him a Christmas tree twinkles in warm gold light. Pinecones and a sprig of pine rest by the mug, and a grey knitted blanket hangs off the table's edge.

Dachshunds are long-bodied, short-legged dogs with big personalities. They were bred to hunt burrowing animals, so they are curious, determined and often a little stubborn. Their long backs are delicate, so avoid letting them jump from furniture and support their body when you lift them, and keep them at a healthy weight to protect their spines.

Hot cocoa is a hazard for dogs. Chocolate is toxic to them, and the sugar and milk can upset their stomachs, while marshmallows may contain xylitol in some products. Keep mugs well back from the edge of the table, and don't let him lick a cup. If he drinks cocoa, call your vet or a pet poison helpline right away, and be ready to tell them how much he had.

For now the cocoa is untouched and the puppy just sits and sighs. It is a long, drawn-out wish, and a sweet one. If he gets bored of staring, a puppy-safe chew will be waiting for him.
