The Newest Elf at the Workshop Turned Out to Be a Basset Hound Puppy
A droopy-eared Basset Hound puppy sits on the floor in a green felt elf costume with red trim and a little gold bell at the neck. His eyes are soulful, his ears are long and velvety, and his white paws are planted neatly in front. Behind him, a sofa, some gift boxes and a twinkling tree sit in a slightly cluttered room full of holiday cheer.
Basset Hounds are gentle, mellow scent hounds with long ears, wrinkled brows and an unmistakable sad-eyed charm. They are friendly, patient dogs with an incredible sense of smell, and they follow their nose wherever it takes them. They can be stubborn during training, so patience and treats help, and their long ears need regular cleaning and checking.
If a puppy wears a costume, check for loose bells or buttons that can come off and be swallowed. The outfit should be loose enough for him to move freely and shouldn't cover his eyes or ears or make him too warm. Keep dress-up sessions short, reward him with praise, and take the costume off if he seems bothered. Always supervise him while he wears it.
The little elf looks ready to work, though his face says he would like to nap first. That is probably the best attitude for a holiday helper. The bell jingles when he sneezes, which may be the most festive sound of the season.
