Willa Wandered Into the Pumpkin Patch and Felt Very Small
Among the giants, a tiny silver tabby sits with her ears perked and her head turned to the side. Large orange pumpkins loom on every side, with curling vines and dry stalks still tangled between them. Fallen leaves cover the dark earth, and in the background a white porch railing and a house peek through. Her pale coat with its dark swirls is a cool contrast to all that orange.
A pumpkin patch is a world of new textures and smells, and kittens love to explore. Their whiskers, which are very sensitive, help them judge distances and gaps, and they use them to figure out where they can squeeze. Young cats also learn by climbing and pouncing, which is how they build coordination. A safe place to practice, indoors or in a closed yard, is a good thing for a kitten.
In a real garden, a few cautions apply. Kittens should be supervised outdoors, ideally on a harness or in a secure enclosure. Garden tools, fertilizers, and pest treatments can be toxic, and some plants are harmful if chewed. Keep an eye on vines and leaves as well. We will call this explorer Willa. She seems to be thinking about which pumpkin to climb first, tail low and eyes bright. Whatever she chooses, it will be a very big adventure for a very small cat.
