A Black Labrador Wears More Spider Web Than the Spider Intended

Strands of stretchy white cobweb wrap around his head, drape over his shoulders and trail across the floor, and one small plastic spider sits on his neck. The black Labrador stands in the entryway with an expression of mild surprise, eyes soft and brown under the netting. Behind him there are shoes on a tray, a plaid jacket on a bench, a small pumpkin and an open door, so the whole scene has the feel of a very busy fall day.

Labs are friendly, energetic dogs, and many of them are happy to walk right through whatever is in their way, which is how decorations end up in unusual places. They are generally patient and good-natured, and they like to be near their people. Their enthusiasm means they benefit from regular exercise and from training that teaches them to pause and look before charging ahead.

Fake spider web is a decoration to treat with care around pets. The stretchy fibers can wrap around a leg, a neck or a toy, and if a dog chews or swallows it, it can cause serious trouble. If your dog gets tangled, stay calm, hold him still and gently remove the strands, and call your vet if he swallowed any. Hanging webbing out of reach is the safest choice.

We will call him Charlie, and he is wearing his cobwebs with remarkable patience. He does not seem scared, and it is a very good thing a helper is probably on the way.
