A Weimaraner Walks Off With the Whole Bag of Halloween Candy
Held gently in his mouth is a clear bag filled with candy corn and wrapped sweets, and the silver gray Weimaraner holding it is looking straight at us with innocent amber eyes. He sits on a wooden floor beside a small rug, with a small jack-o'-lantern and a pair of shoes in the background, and a hallway behind him leading to a bed with a navy blanket. He does not look sorry yet, but he does look very sure of himself.
Weimaraners are smart, athletic retrievers by nature, so carrying things in the mouth comes very naturally. That makes him a fine fetch partner, but it also means a bag of anything left within reach can disappear fast. They are also clever and quick to learn, so teaching a reliable drop it cue can be a great investment, with a treat as the trade.
This picture is a good reminder that Halloween candy is not for dogs. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, candies sweetened with xylitol can be dangerous, and wrappers can cause blockages. Keep candy bowls and bags out of reach, and if your dog eats any, call your vet or an animal poison hotline right away instead of waiting.
We will call him Bandit, and he is clearly trained to bring his treasure. The best plan is a calm trade, a good word and a safer snack. The candy is still wrapped, so the trade should work out in everyone's favor.
