A Pug Takes His Post Beside the Halloween Candy Bowl
Beside a glass bowl of shiny wrapped candy, a fawn Pug sits very upright, gazing toward the window as if keeping a lookout for trick-or-treaters. His wrinkled forehead and dark mask give him an expression of serious responsibility. A wreath with little black spiders hangs by the front door, a plaid jacket and umbrella hang on pegs, and small pumpkins and sneakers sit in the corner of the entryway.
Pugs are small, sturdy dogs with a big personality, usually friendly, playful and happy to be near their people. Their short noses mean they can overheat and snore, and many are food-motivated, so staying at a healthy weight matters. Ask your vet about the right amount of exercise and food, and keep walks gentle on warm days.
A candy bowl by the door is a good place for a pug to sit and a bad place for a pug to be unsupervised. Chocolate, sugar substitutes like xylitol and foil wrappers are risky for dogs. If you give out candy, keep the bowl on a high shelf between visitors, or use a basket your dog cannot reach. Offer your dog his own safe treat so he can join in the fun.
We will call him Gus. He is on guard, and everything in the bowl is exactly as it was. His loyalty at the door is the sweetest treat of the night. Whoever knocks first will meet the most polite doorman in the neighborhood.
