A Basset Hound in a Pirate Hat Takes Command of the Yard
Captain Basset has taken charge of the backyard. A tricolor Basset Hound stands on a lawn scattered with orange leaves, wearing a black pirate hat, a navy coat with gold buttons and a shiny eye patch pushed up over one eyebrow. His long ears droop like spaniel-sized sails and his big dark nose is held high. A few pumpkins and a pot of rust-colored mums sit near the fence behind him, and his brown eyes look warm and a bit sleepy.
Basset Hounds were bred to follow scent trails, and that famous nose is why they can seem so absorbed in the ground. They are usually gentle, patient and good with families, though they can be stubborn when something smells interesting. Their long backs and short legs mean it is wise to keep them at a healthy weight and avoid too much jumping on and off furniture, and your vet can advise on joint care.
A costume works best when it fits well. Check that a coat does not tug on the neck or hold the legs back, and that a hat does not cover the eyes or ears in a way that bothers your dog. Short practice sessions before Halloween night, with treats, help your dog get used to it. If he seems unhappy, skip the costume.
This captain looks completely at ease. The treasure map is probably somewhere in the leaf pile, and he plans to sniff his way there at his own pace. The crew is welcome to join whenever they are ready.
