A Cocker Spaniel Puppy Wonders What His Bat Wings Are For
Long, silky ears frame a sweet face with dark, serious eyes, and on the puppy's back a pair of black bat wings is clipped to a harness. The buff Cocker Spaniel puppy sits on weathered porch boards with fallen leaves around him, and a garland of autumn leaves is wrapped along the white porch post behind him. A few small pumpkins and a jack-o'-lantern sit by the steps, and a watering can rests on the lawn.
Cocker Spaniels are gentle, cheerful dogs with a lovely coat and a long history as bird-hunting companions. They are usually affectionate and eager to please, and many love being close to their family. Their long ears need regular cleaning and checking, because the shape can trap moisture, and the coat needs brushing to prevent tangles.
Wings on a harness are a good costume choice since they leave the face and legs free. Check that the straps do not rub, and that the wings do not catch on railings or steps. Supervise a puppy in costume and do not let him play rough while wearing it. A treat and a bit of praise let him know he did well, and a short session is plenty.
We will call him Batty. He has the earnest look of a puppy who is not sure what the wings are for, and that is very endearing. The wings are a little big, the evening is still and the porch is lovely. He looks wonderful.
