A Schnauzer Puppy Takes a Nap at the Scarecrow's Feet
With his chin on the boards and his scruffy paws tucked in, a black and silver Miniature Schnauzer puppy is sound asleep on the porch. Right beside him, a scarecrow in plaid and denim overalls sits against the post with a straw hat, a stitched smile and straw poking from his sleeves and cuffs. A jack-o'-lantern and a small pumpkin glow in the evening sun, a pair of boots sits by the window and corn stalks lean in the corner.
Puppies sleep for much of the day, often 18 hours or more, because they are growing and learning so fast. A puppy who naps deeply in the middle of a busy porch is usually comfortable and secure. Miniature Schnauzers are sturdy, alert dogs with a wiry coat and a spirited personality, and as puppies they often alternate between wild play and a sudden crash into a nap.
A scarecrow is a fun fall decoration, but straw and stuffing are not a snack. If a puppy starts to chew on it, gently redirect him to a chew toy. A puppy napping outside should be watched, with a blanket if the air is cool, and he should not be left alone on a porch. Water and a short rest indoors are good habits after outside play.
We will call him Pepper. He seems to have decided the scarecrow is a fine companion, quiet and patient and never in a hurry. They are a very peaceful pair on a golden autumn evening.
