The Smallest Lion in the Neighborhood Is Guarding the Yard

Wide-eyed and a little bit surprised, a tiny grey tabby kitten sits on the grass wearing a fuzzy golden-brown lion mane. The costume frames her face like a fluffy halo, making her pink nose and big green eyes look even smaller. Orange leaves dot the lawn around her, and behind her are a garden, a house and a few little pumpkins glowing near the steps.

Costumes can be cute, but cats are more particular than dogs about what they wear. If you want to dress a kitten for Halloween, pick something light with plenty of room for the head, legs and tail, and let her wear it for only a few minutes at a time. Watch for any signs of stress, such as freezing, flattened ears, hiding or trying to wriggle out, and take it off right away. Keep an eye out for dangling parts she could chew. Kittens should never be left outside alone, especially at dusk when the air gets cold and traffic is busy.

Our little lion, Leo, looks like she is not sure whether to roar or to run back inside. Her gaze is curious and brave, and the mane is surely the fluffiest part of her. Every Halloween needs a ferocious beast, even if she weighs only a pound or two and would probably prefer a nap in a sunny window.
