The Jack-o'-Lantern Lit Up, and a Fluffy Grey Kitten Took Her Seat
Dusk has settled over the porch, and a freshly carved jack-o'-lantern glows orange beside a tiny grey Persian kitten. The pumpkin's triangle eyes and jagged grin light up her fluffy coat, which looks like a puff of smoke. She faces away from us, gazing across the yard, and her round face is lit with a warm glow. A lantern hangs by the dark front door, a basket of pumpkins sits to one side and orange mums fill a pot.
A glowing pumpkin is a lovely thing to see, but a real flame is a hazard around pets. A kitten's tail or fur can reach a candle in an instant, and a knocked-over pumpkin can start a fire. Battery-powered flickering lights are a far safer choice and look just as warm. Persians have long, fine fur that tangles easily and needs gentle brushing every day, and a coat like that is especially good at catching sparks, so keep her well away from anything hot. Always supervise a young kitten outside after dark, and bring her in when the evening cools.
Smudge watches the evening with the calm dignity of her breed. The pumpkin might be glowing, but she is the one who looks truly luminous. There will be plenty of trick-or-treaters soon, and from her spot beside the pumpkin she has the best view on the whole street.
