The Carving Was Finished, but the Seed Inspector Had Just Arrived

A pumpkin carving party is winding down, and the table is covered in slippery white seeds, orange chunks and stringy pulp. Right in the middle sniffs a tiny black Devon Rex kitten, her wavy, velvety coat and enormous ears making her look like a small bat. Her head is lowered and her nose is almost touching the seeds. A finished jack-o'-lantern watches from the corner, and a blue towel and a kitchen window complete the scene.

Carving tables are fascinating for cats, but they are full of small hazards. Raw pumpkin and seeds are usually not harmful in tiny amounts, but a whole pile of seeds can upset a stomach, and pulp mixed with salt or seasoning is best avoided. Carving knives and scoops should be put away right away, and candles kept out of reach. Devon Rex cats are playful, people-loving and very curious, famous for following their families around the house and getting into everything. Their thin coat also means they like warm spots, so a soft blanket helps. Clean up the mess quickly, and call the vet if a kitten eats something odd.

Poppy is pure curiosity in a small black package. She takes each seed seriously, giving it a careful sniff, and she may decide the whole table is a fine place for a mystery. The cleanup crew will have to wait.
