Someone Got Tangled in the Halloween Spider Web, and It Wasn't a Fly
Stretchy white strands of spider web have settled over a tiny tortoiseshell kitten like a lacy shawl. Her dark coat, swirled with amber and brown, peeks through the web, and her round green-gold eyes look off to the side, a bit puzzled and a bit proud. She sits on a soft carpet in a room with a basket of pinecones, a plaid throw and a small pumpkin by the door, all lit by warm evening sun.
Fake spider webs are fun to look at, but they are one of the less safe Halloween decorations around cats. The fine, sticky strands can wrap around legs, whiskers and necks, and if a kitten chews or swallows them they can cause a dangerous blockage in the stomach or intestines. If you do use webbing, hang it high where a cat cannot reach, and never drape it near a spot where she plays. If she does get tangled, stay calm, gently remove the strands and keep a close watch. Call your vet if she eats any. Tortoiseshell cats are known for lots of personality, and a playful one like this loves to pounce on anything that moves.
Ember looks more fascinated than frightened, and she probably thinks the web is a very odd blanket. Once she is freed, a feather toy would make a much better prize. For now she poses like a little queen in a lace cape.
