The Family Opened Presents While One Terrier Watched From the Couch
From a knit blanket on the couch, a brown, black and white Jack Russell Terrier named Jasper watches the action with sharp, intelligent eyes. His ears flop forward, his nose points toward the floor and his front paws rest on the soft wool. In the middle distance, a woman and a boy sit among torn paper and boxes by the tree, with stockings hanging on the mantel and a glowing tree above them.
Jack Russell Terriers are bold, energetic dogs bred for hunting, and they tend to be quick, clever and full of drive. A busy gift-opening morning is hard for a dog like that to sit through, so a long walk or a game of fetch beforehand can help him settle. Give him a special chew or a puzzle toy to enjoy while the family opens presents, and keep wrapping paper, ribbons and small toys out of his reach. Terriers also love to dig and shred paper, so supervise closely. Training a calm spot on the couch with a blanket and a treat makes the morning easier for everyone. Short bursts of play also keep a Jack Russell happy.
Jasper is on his best behavior, watching and waiting for his turn. He seems to know that something may come with his name on it. For now, the best seat in the house is enough.
