The Politest Beggar at the Thanksgiving Table Is Also the Smallest
With both front paws resting on the rim of a plate, a blue-gray kitten rises on her hind legs to look at a mound of mashed potatoes topped with melting butter. Her green eyes are wide and her silvery coat has a faint sheen. Around her, a messy table holds olives, a glass, a plaid cloth, and fall decorations, and behind her the kitchen windows glow.
Russian Blues are often described as gentle, quiet, and a little shy with strangers but devoted to their families. They are intelligent and may learn routines quickly, which sometimes includes where dinner comes from. Mashed potatoes by themselves are not poisonous, but the butter, cream, garlic, and onion we add can upset a cat's stomach, and cats are strict meat-eaters who do not need table food. A tiny lick likely will not hurt, but if she has eaten a lot of rich food or something with onions or garlic, call your vet. Give her a bowl of her own, and feed her on a regular schedule so she is not hungry while the family eats.
The best habit is to keep plates out of reach and give your kitten attention in other ways, like play or a gentle brush.
Her manners are lovely, and the potatoes look really tempting from where she is standing.
