A Chocolate Lab Grinned Beside a Bag of Potting Soil He Had Opened
A chocolate Lab lowers his head with a small, guilty grin, bits of dirt scattered at his front paws and a torn burlap sack spilling dark potting soil across a stone patio. His warm brown eyes are fixed on yours, his floppy ears hang forward, and his mouth is open just enough to show a hint of a smile.
Behind him, clay pots wait on the patio, a folding ladder leans against a wall, and a few plants peek out from the corner. The sky is soft and overcast. We'll call him Mulch. He appears to have decided that the gardening project needed his help, and he has taken it very seriously.
Labrador Retrievers are friendly, energetic dogs that love to dig, chew, and carry things, so a bag of soil is hard to resist. Potting mixes can contain fertilizers, fungus, or additives that may upset a dog's stomach, and some mulches, particularly cocoa bean mulch, are toxic to dogs. Keep garden supplies in a shed or on a high shelf, and call your vet or a pet poison hotline if your dog eats any. Labs need plenty of daily exercise and chew toys, and a dedicated digging spot, such as a sandbox, can save the flower beds. Wipe his paws and coat after outdoor adventures to keep soil from coming indoors.
Mulch sits in the dirt with his grin, a happy gardener who thinks the job is going well.
