Calico Cat Surveys the Trash She Just Spread Across the Floor

The calico is sitting at the scene of the crime with her ears pulled back, and the crime is easy to read. The gray trash can lies on its side, and out of it has poured a long slide of crumpled paper, banana peels, wrappers, and bits of packaging across the wood floor. Her orange, black, and white coat looks tidy next to all that mess, and her golden eyes are turned off to the side in the universal pose of someone hoping for a quiet exit.

Trash cans are a magnet for curious cats because they are full of interesting smells, and cats have a strong sense of smell. Unfortunately, garbage can also hold things that are not safe, such as food scraps, string, plastic, and sharp edges. A can with a tight lid, or one kept inside a cabinet, is a simple fix. Make sure the trash is out of reach of any cat who likes to climb. If your cat eats something she should not have, such as bones, string, or spoiled food, call your vet. Giving her a full food bowl, a few puzzle toys, and some playtime can also reduce her interest in the garbage.

Calicos are often said to have big personalities, and this one is showing hers. She does not look especially sorry, just aware that she has been seen. A broom and a lidded can are coming, and the banana peels are not going to clean themselves.
