The Birman on the Counter Has a Perfect Alibi and Bread Crumbs
Crusty bread crumbs are scattered across the kitchen counter, and a loaf with one end torn off sits right next to the Birman who is now looking carefully out the window. She is perched with her white paws tidy, her dark face turned to one side and her fluffy tail hanging over the edge. A tea towel is bunched up behind her, and a bowl of fruit and a few plants brighten the sunny kitchen. She appears to be an expert at not being involved.
Cats are skilled at turning counters into lookout posts, and a loaf of bread is hard to ignore when it smells fresh. Plain bread in a tiny nibble is usually not a big problem for most cats, but it offers them nothing useful, and some baked goods contain ingredients that are unsafe, such as raisins, xylitol, or onion and garlic. Dough that has not been baked can be especially dangerous because it can rise inside the stomach. If your cat helps herself to something you are not sure about, call your vet. Birmans are friendly and clever, and they like to be where the action is, so a cat tree by the kitchen window gives her a view and keeps her paws off the bread.
Her tiny pose of innocence is the best part. She has given the whole thing a lot of thought, and she is certain she has the perfect alibi. The loaf, sadly, will go to the birds.
