The Silver Tabby Has Opinions About Today's Newspaper
Strips of newsprint cover the floor in a rough drift, and the silver tabby next to it has decided to turn his head with a thoughtful look, ears angled back. His coat is a neat pattern of grey stripes and his yellow eyes are fixed on something off to the side, perhaps a window or perhaps an excuse. Beyond the pile there is a plaid blanket on a chair, a basket on a table, and a pair of glasses resting among books.
Newspaper is a favorite target for shredding because it tears easily, makes a satisfying sound, and gives cats a chance to use their claws and teeth. Shredding is a normal play behavior, and many cats enjoy a pile of paper or an old phone book of their own, which can let them express those instincts without ruining anything important. The ink on modern newspapers is generally not a big concern, but it is a good idea to keep him from eating the paper, and if he does, talk to your vet. For cats who love to tear, a scratching post, a cardboard scratcher, and a few foraging toys make a good replacement. Daily play also helps burn off energy that might go into the morning paper.
