A Yorkie Sits Very Still in the Middle of Game Night

Colorful wooden pieces spread across the rug like confetti: stars, squares, little hexagons, and tiny circles in blue, red, and yellow. In the middle of it all sits a blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier, ears perked, head tilted slightly up, eyes round and wide. The dog looks ready to deny knowing anything about any game, even though a small piece rests nearly under one paw and a clear plastic cup lies on its side nearby.

Yorkshire Terriers are small dogs with big confidence. They were originally bred to catch rats in mills, and many still have a lively, curious, terrier streak that loves to investigate everything on the floor. Small game pieces and puzzle bits can be a choking hazard for little dogs, so it is wise to put board games away on a shelf and count the pieces after play. A good game of fetch or a snuffle mat can give a curious Yorkie something fun to hunt for. If a piece goes missing, check the floor first, and talk to your vet if you think it was swallowed.

The family game night will have to start with a hunt under the sofa. The Yorkie will probably help, enthusiastically and with great confidence, in all the wrong places, tail wagging the whole time as though this were the best game of all.
