A Black Cat Stands Guard Over a Sandwich With One Giant Bite
A fluffy black cat crouches on the kitchen floor with yellow eyes wide and ears folded flat. In front lies a sandwich with a large bite taken out of it, bits of lettuce and crumbs sprinkled around like evidence. The cat has the stiff, careful pose of someone who knows they have been seen, with a tote bag, a mug, and some scattered papers behind on the counter.
Cats are curious hunters at heart, and a sandwich left at their eye level is hard to ignore. Many human foods are not good for cats, though. Deli meats can be very salty, and onion, garlic, and some sauces are unsafe for them. Cats are also obligate carnivores, which simply means they need meat-based nutrition and do best on food made for them. Keep plates off low surfaces and cover food when you step away. A few small, cat-safe treats offered at a regular time can reduce the begging. If your cat ate something odd, call your vet for advice.
The sandwich is a lost cause now, but the cat holds her ground with that midnight-black stare. It is hard to scold someone who looks so much like a small, fluffy panther caught in the headlights. Tomorrow the lunch plates will go up high, and the cat will go back to being the picture of a perfectly well-behaved house panther, at least until the next unattended snack.
