The Beagle Turned the Bathroom Into a Paper Parade
Streamers of white toilet paper drape over the tub, the sink, the laundry basket, and one tricolor Beagle, who has frozen in the middle of the bathroom with wide, round eyes. A long strip hangs from the ear and another trails down the back like a bridal veil. The cardboard tubes lie empty on the tile. The dog stares at the doorway the way a person stares at a car approaching with its headlights on.
Beagles are scent hounds, bred to follow their noses for hours, and their curiosity is legendary. They are cheerful, social dogs who dislike being bored or left alone for long stretches. A bored Beagle can turn a bathroom into a project in about a minute, and a roll that unspools so nicely is hard to resist. Keep doors shut and rolls out of reach, and give your Beagle a sniffing game, like hidden treats in a snuffle mat or a short scent walk, to use that clever nose. Eating a lot of paper isn't great for dogs, so call your vet if you think your pet swallowed more than a little.
Whoever opens that door will find the cleanest-looking disaster in the house. The Beagle, ears draped in tissue, is already planning what to say, and the answer, unfortunately, is a short, hopeful wag. Meanwhile the empty tubes roll quietly under the tub, and the day's biggest question is who gets to start the cleanup.
