A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Became a Ball of Yarn

The wicker basket has tipped, balls of pink, cream, and white yarn have rolled across the floor, and in the middle of it all sits a tricolor Cavalier King Charles Spaniel wearing most of the thread. Strands loop around the chest and legs like a loose sweater. The dark, shiny eyes look up with perfect innocence, and a pair of knitting needles lie just out of reach. Soft light from the window falls across a gray armchair.

Cavaliers are gentle, affectionate toy spaniels, known for being friendly with nearly everybody and for wanting to be close to their people. That sweetness often comes with plenty of curiosity, and a basket of colorful yarn is a very tempting toy. Yarn can be dangerous if swallowed, though, because long strings can tangle in a dog's or cat's digestive system and need urgent veterinary care, so store knitting supplies in a closed container. If your dog is tangled, stay calm and snip the yarn carefully rather than pulling it, and call your vet if any yarn was eaten.

The sweater project has been delayed, but the dog is a fashion success. Wrapped in pink and cream, with soft spaniel eyes and a very careful posture, the Cavalier looks as if she meant to model all along. Tomorrow the basket will sit on a high shelf with a lid, and the Cavalier will gaze up at it with her gentlest expression.
