The Aussie Chewed the Remote and Now Nobody Can Change the Channel
A black tricolor Australian Shepherd lies on the carpet with its chest to the ground, eyes pointed up and a little to the side, the very picture of a guilty conscience. Right next to its paws lies a TV remote, its buttons chewed and its edges marked with tooth dents. The amber brows tilt up in worry, and a plant and a basket sit in the soft gray background.
Australian Shepherds are smart and energetic herding dogs, and they are happiest with a job to do. Without enough exercise and mental work, many Aussies turn to chewing as a way to burn energy, and a remote full of buttons is a tempting toy. Chewing batteries is a real danger, because they can harm a dog's mouth or stomach, so keep remotes and small electronics out of reach, and if you think your dog swallowed a battery or a piece of plastic, call your vet at once. A good long game of fetch or a training session can often replace the chewing.
The TV will have to be changed by hand tonight, and the family may be forced to watch a show nobody chose. As for the Aussie, her eyebrows are doing their best, and nobody can say she looks anything but truly sorry. A good walk first thing tomorrow might help, and a sturdy chew toy will certainly be offered in the remote's place.
