A Tiny Yorkie Found the Garbage Bag and Got Very Busy With It
The garbage bag is open, and a tiny Yorkie is deeply engaged in the contents. His blue and tan coat is a little rumpled, his ears are tilted, and his nose is pointed straight at a spill of peels, wrappers, and a plastic tub that have tumbled across the grass. Behind him, a wooden fence and a leafy garden make a pretty backdrop for an unpretty scene. He has the busy look of a small detective who has found the clue he was looking for.
Yorkshire Terriers are small dogs with big personalities, and the terrier in them loves to dig, sniff, and investigate. That nose is powerful, and garbage is full of exciting smells. Unfortunately, trash can hold things that are dangerous for dogs: cooked bones, moldy food, onions, grapes, chocolate, and sharp packaging can all cause serious problems. Because Yorkies are so small, even a little can be a lot for them. Use a bin with a tight lid, keep it in a garage or cabinet, and take bags out only on pickup day. Give him a puzzle toy or a sniff mat to satisfy his hunting instincts. If he eats something from the trash, call your vet, especially if he is vomiting or seems unwell.
For now, he looks like a very small and very focused explorer. The lawn cleanup is going to take longer than his investigation did.
